A transatlantic liner on the hills: the mysterious "Ship of Genga"

Among the woods and cultivated hills of the Marche Apennines lies one of Italy's most surreal sights. Travelling along the road connecting Sassoferrato to Genga, looking up towards the hamlet of Osteria di Colleponi, you are struck by an optical illusion bordering on the incredible: a cruise ship beached in the green hills. It is not a mirage, but a bizarre building known to all as La Nave di Genga. A dream between land and sea In the 70s, a local resident with a life spent sailing the world's seas decided to return to his homeland to realise an ambitious project: to build a restaurant in the shape of a cruise ship, taking advantage of the flow of tourists heading to the nearby Frasassi Caves. Made of reinforced concrete, the structure surprisingly echoes the lines of a vessel: * An imposing bow facing the valley; * Upper decks designed to offer a panoramic view of the Marche hills; * Careful details such as the portholes along the side walls. A shipwreck on dry land Despite the original idea, the project never really took off. The restaurant remained open for very short periods before closing its doors, gradually becoming a ghost ship immersed in vegetation over time. In recent decades, the "Ship" has become a point of reference for the curious, photographers, and enthusiasts of mysterious and abandoned places. Despite periodic proposals for recovery or redevelopment, the concrete wreck continues to dominate the hilly landscape, a testament to a dream left suspended in time.
